Ceremony Marks Milestone of Achievement for Philadelphia Youth Getting Their GED

Posted on July 6, 2012 by Liberty Lutheran

A little over a year since its re-opening under the new administration of the non-profit Liberty Lutheran Children and Family Service, the E3 Logan Center, one of five in low-income areas in Philadelphia and the only E3 in the Northwest section of the city, graduated 40 young people who have successfully obtained their GED. The graduation ceremony at Moore College of Art will celebrated the achievements of over 100 graduates from all five of Philadelphia’s E3 Centers.

The newest of the five E3 Centers, E3 Logan has successfully and creatively addressed the academic, social and personal needs of the youth it serves. Despite limited resources, Liberty Lutheran Children and Family Service has used its expertise in youth engagement and social services to not only recruit participants, but to also get them to remain in the program and acquire their GED. Twenty more individuals will be graduating in July.

For these young people, obtaining their GED has meant overcoming enormous obstacles and challenges in their lives. An overwhelming number of the youths in the program are single parents, and many have a history of juvenile placement and alcohol and drug abuse. Thursday’s event marks a significant milestone and a point of great pride for the 40 young people and their families from the E3 Logan Center who stuck it out, as well as for the Center and its staff.
